Melissa is committed to protecting the culture of life and during her time in Congress took the lead on a number of successful pro-life initiatives. She was the sponsor of the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, which makes it a separate crime to harm an unborn child as the result of violence against the mother. This important legislation was signed into law. Melissa was also a lead cosponsor of the law that banned the barbaric practice of partial-birth abortion.
