Once again, the biggest race in the region promises to be the one between Jason Altmire (D-PA) and Melissa Hart in the 4th Congressional District.

The two candidates are unopposed in the primary, but the general election will be a rematch of the election in 2006 where the up and coming Altmire, 40, pulled out a close victory over the incumbent Hart, 45.

In 2006, Hart, a Republican, was finishing her third term as Pennsylvania's representative to Congress. She served on the Committee on Ways and Means and had been on the Republican Whip Team since 2003.

Prior to winning the 2006 election, Altmire was a healthcare executive with UPMC. This was his first congressional term, but he also served as a legislative assistant to Congressman Pete Peterson of Florida.

Altmire currently lives in McCandless with his wife, Kelly, and their two daughters. He has his bachelor's degree in political science from Florida State University and his Master in Health Services Administration from George Washington University.

He is also the president of the McCandless Rotary Club and a member of the advisory board for Penn State Beaver.

His Web site can be found at www.jasonaltmire.com.

Hart lives in Bradford Woods.

She got her bachelor's degree from Washington and Jefferson College and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a graduate of North Allegheny High School.

She is an attorney at Keevican, Weiss, Bauerle and Hirsch, LLC., which has offices in Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

Hart served from 1991 to 2001 in the Pennsylvania State Senate and was in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2007. She serves as a trustee with the University of Pittsburgh, Community College of Allegheny County and Washington and Jefferson College. She is also on the board of the Veterans Leadership Program and the Pittsburgh Film Office.

Her Web site can be found at www.peoplewithhart.com.

The 4th Congressional District includes Beaver and Lawrence counties, and parts of Allegheny, Westmoreland, Mercer and Butler counties.
